Триацетин используется в производстве биодизеля в качестве добавки, которая повышает горючесть топлива и снижает количество частиц в дыме при сгорании. Это позволяет извлечь больше энергии из меньшего количества исходного сырья, что способно удешевить производство биодизеля.
В окурках остаются бумага и фильтр, который состоит из ацетата целлюлозы — они и являются источником для получения триацетина. Для этого исходный материал подвергают пиролизу, и при достижении температуры в 750 °C происходит выделение наибольшей доли триацетина в 43 %. Параллельно образуются уголь и газ, первый можно использовать как фильтр благодаря его пористой структуре, второй сжечь как топливо.
По примерным оценкам, в мире скопилось 4,5 триллиона сигаретных окурков, которые в настоящее время представляют собой невероятно токсичный мусор. Возможность их переработки поможет очистить планету и одновременно увеличить производство и использование биодизеля, как более безопасной для окружающей среды версии топлива, чем сделанного путем переработки углеводородов.
