Рекордная жара лета 2022 года подвигла ученых из Уханьского университета в Китае на создание покрытия оконных стекол для отражения инфракрасного излучения. Типовое стекло хорошо пропускает ИК-излучение ближнего диапазона, но блокирует излучение в среднем диапазоне. Из-за этого жар накапливается внутри помещения, из-за чего оно перегревается, однако держать окна распахнутыми настежь также не всегда возможно.

Идея в том, что фотоны света в видимом диапазоне легко проходят через воду и не теряют энергию даже на глубине 1 метра. А фотоны инфракрасного света, переносчики тепла, могут проникать в воду всего на несколько миллиметров. Поэтому китайские ученые использовали гидрогель, который состоит из воды, чтобы создать изолирующее покрытие стекла против солнечных лучей.

Преимущество такого покрытия в том, что оно отражает до 96 % инфракрасного излучения обратно в атмосферу, но при этом сохраняет прозрачность и пропускает до 92,8 % видимого света. Благодаря этому на экспериментальных моделях зданий с модифицированными стеклами удалось добиться снижения температуры внутри на 3,5℃. Без каких либо затрат энергии и с минимальными расходами, так как гидрогели дешевы и широко доступны.
