Команда Калифорнийского университета разработала технологию переработки лигнина, которая позволит увеличить выработку биотоплива из растительного сырья. До этого лигнин относили к отходам – это прочное вещество, которое создает «каркас» растений, плохо поддается переработке. Его предпочитали просто сжигать, чтобы извлекать выгоду хотя бы из полученного тепла.
Около десяти лет назад Чарльз Кай начал работу по поиску способов переработки лигнина в рамках общей задачи по созданию альтернативы топливу из ископаемого сырья. В конечном виде это должно быть полной утилизацией биомассы с получением нулевого количества отходов, чтобы не загрязнять окружающую среду. Это позволит отказаться от выращивания специальных растений – биотопливо можно будет получать из чего угодно.
Для переработки лигнина используется тетрагидрофуран в сочетании с разбавленными кислотами. Технология во многом экспериментальная, она построена на альтернативном использовании технологических процессов переработки растительного сырья. Сейчас необходимо адаптировать производство под использование материалов с высоким содержанием лигнина, таких как древесина, вместо традиционной кукурузной соломы.
Из соломы по умолчанию получается эквивалент 167 л бензина на тонну сухого материала, при добавлении расщепления лигнина выход увеличивается до 196 л. Однако если взять древесину тополя, то можно получить уже 287 л топлива. В теории, данная технология позволит снизить стоимость авиационного топлива до $3,15 за галлон при текущей средней цене самолетного биотоплива $9,28 за галлон. На практике очень много зависит от субсидий, разрешений и прочих условий производства, которые заметно варьируются в разных странах.
