В самом простом варианте это универсальный накопитель данных — на испытаниях расшитое такой нитью полотенце более двух месяцев хранило 767-килобитный полноцветный короткометражный фильм и 0,48-мегабайтный музыкальный файл.
Еще интереснее, что с увеличением длины нити и сложности схемы из нее можно сделать подобие компьютера или нейросети. В качестве примера Финк изготовил систему из 1650 соединений, которую вшили в рубашку. Она анализировала данные о температуре и влажности кожи человека, а после небольшого обучения научилась распознавать вид физических упражнений, которые он выполняет, с точностью до 90 %.
Представленный образец выдерживает до 10 циклов стирки и сушки, он не стесняет движений и не ощущается человеком в составе другой ткани. Узкое место — наличие внешнего контроллера, но Финк полагает, что его не составит труда заменить миниатюрными встроенными аналогами. И тогда можно будет создавать действительно «умную ткань», которую можно программировать для широкого спектра задач.
