Дело в том, что, когда вышел «Доктор Живаго» и Борис Леонидович получил Нобелевскую премию, мой отец был первым секретарем московского отделения Союза писателей. Ясное дело: он в этом участвовал, он делал доклад на том заседании, где Пастернака исключали из Союза писателей. Пастернак на заседание не пришел. Андрей Смирнов родился в 1941 году в Москве. Его отец – писатель Сергей Смирнов, автор книги «Брестская крепость», лауреат Ленинской премии. В 1962 году окончил режиссерский факультет Всероссийского государственного института кинематографии.

Как режиссер дебютировал в 1964 году с фильмом «Пядь земли». Широкая известность к Смирнову пришла с картиной «Белорусский вокзал», которая вышла в 1971 году.
