Японский стартап EX-Fusion предложил необычный план по уничтожению космического мусора лучами мощного наземного лазера с диодной накачкой.
Суть предлагаемой идеи состоит в выталкивании космических обломков с помощью лазерных лучей в безопасную зону, откуда они начнут снижаться к Земле и затем сгорят в плотных слоях атмосферы. При создании космического лазера EX-Fusion намерена использовать свой опыт, накопленный в изучении ядерного синтеза.
На первом этапе лазер будет смонтирован в обсерватории в Канберре (Австралия) компанией EOS Space. В рамках подписанного в октябре прошлого года совместного меморандума компании договорились о создании небольшого лазера для отслеживания фрагментов космического мусора размером не более 10 см — слишком мелких для других наземных лазеров.
Второй этап — непосредственное уничтожение конкретных фрагментов космического мусора. «Стрельба» будет вестись по ним на встречных курсах, из-за чего скорость обломков резко снизится и они начнут «проваливаться» в атмосферу.
