В подобных устройствах применена технология, построенная на отражении передаваемых сигналов от тропосферы, которая является нижним слоем земной атмосферы.
С помощью «Грозы» можно организовать широкополосную цифровую связь в труднодоступных, а также малонаселенных районах страны, вдоль автотрасс и железнодорожных путей и на «удаленных от цивилизации» промышленных предприятиях и объектах.
При этом эффективный радиус действия тропосферных станций достигает внушительные 210 км, а данные передаются с приличной скоростью до 45,5 Мбит/с.
Антенну такой станции, имеющую диаметр почти 150 см, размещают на крышах зданий, вышках сотовой связи или на простой треноге, а входящий в ее состав модем самостоятельно обучается за счет нейросетей прямо в ходе работы, определяя в фоновых шумах наиболее важные сигналы.
